Resilience is Crucial
From the outset, Anne Marie’s story is one of courage in the face of adversity. Reflecting on her award, she remarked, “The award represents the struggles faced by Traveller women and acknowledges the difficulty in reaching out for help, especially regarding issues like addiction—challenges often overlooked in our community.” Having embarked on her journey over thirteen years ago, Anne Marie has witnessed the profound impact of stigma and shame on her community. She emphasises, “It’s vital to be a voice for those who feel voiceless and to provide them with hope. Resilience is crucial; many of us grapple with external stigma and internal vulnerabilities.”
For Anne Marie, the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction is particularly acute for women. “Women are often seen as the backbone of the family, so admitting to struggles with mental health or addiction can feel like a weakness,” she explains. This perception and a lack of understanding surrounding these issues create a barrier that prevents many women from seeking help. “Nearly every family in my community has been affected by addiction or mental health issues, yet women carry the brunt of household responsibilities, making it difficult for them to seek help,” she adds.
The Importance of Creating a Safe Space
Her commitment to breaking this cycle is evident in her work with Pavee Point, an organisation focused on supporting the Traveller community. Anne Marie describes her role as vital: “My work at Pavee Point focuses on raising awareness about addiction within the Traveller community and supporting individuals in recovery. It’s essential to create a safe space for dialogue about these issues.” Her efforts have resulted in a notable increase in programme participation, signalling a shift towards greater openness and support.
Anne Marie’s journey has not only transformed her life but has also inspired others within her community. “Since I became involved with initiatives like Pavee Point, I’ve seen increased curiosity and outreach from my community,” she shares. Her transformation has encouraged many Travellers, particularly women, to access support services. “People remember my past and are amazed by my transformation. Many have reached out for guidance, which is encouraging,” she notes.
Educating those Within the Justice System on the Realities Many Travellers Face is Crucial
One of the unique aspects of Anne Marie’s advocacy is her dedication to educating those within the justice system about the realities Travellers face. She has actively trained judges and prison officers, sharing her experiences to foster understanding and empathy. “I’ve shared my story with judges to help them understand the realities faced by Travellers,” she states. “It’s crucial for them to grasp our culture and the biases that often influence their decisions.”
While Anne Marie takes pride in her identity as a Traveller, she also embraces the need for change within the community. “I’m incredibly proud to be a Traveller. I participate in various community events, showcasing our music, arts, and heritage,” she says, highlighting her efforts to promote her culture. Yet, she also acknowledges the necessity of evolving traditions for the betterment of her community.
Reflecting on her journey, Anne Marie recounts the significant decision to transition from a life of travel to a more settled existence. “Taking my family out of our previous environment was a significant risk,” she explains. “I worried that if I stayed, they would struggle without a proper support network, especially given my battle with addiction.” Leaving her past behind was not easy, but it was a step towards creating a better future for her family.
Acceptance is Important in the Process of Healing
Throughout her darkest moments, her children served as her greatest motivation. “What kept me going was my children. I couldn’t let them down. I wanted them to see that giving up isn’t an option and that resilience comes from confronting challenges head-on,” she shares. Her family’s support, coupled with friendships formed during her recovery, has been invaluable in her healing process.
Anne Marie stresses the importance of self-acceptance in her journey. “Acceptance is one of the hardest lessons to learn. It requires peeling back layers of pain and trauma,” she explains. “For me, surrendering to my circumstances and recognising that they’re part of my story was crucial. Only then could I start to heal.”
The discrimination she faced growing up has also profoundly shaped her resolve to help others. “Growing up with discrimination and the stigma surrounding our culture deeply affected my self-worth,” she says. “But it has made me more determined to help others in similar situations.”
Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Our Children
Looking ahead, Anne Marie aspires to leave a lasting legacy for her children and the wider Traveller community. “I want my children to understand the importance of perseverance and not to be afraid to ask for help. For the wider community, I hope to inspire more Travellers to seek mental health and recovery support. There’s light at the end of the tunnel,” she asserts.
Her message to women facing similar struggles is simple yet profound: “I’d encourage them to reach out for support. Even if it feels uncomfortable, taking that first step can lead to amazing things. Believe in yourself; you’re stronger than you think.”
As Anne Marie continues her advocacy work and inspires others with her story, she embodies the spirit of resilience and hope. Her journey reminds us that overcoming even the most challenging obstacles is possible with courage, support, and determination.
