Maureen, is one of nine participants, selected for the National End Ageism campaign by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IRHEC). She shares with Travellers’ Voice why this campaign is important and how she continues to lead by example.
Maureen Ward is a Traveller woman, human rights activist, and a force of nature committed to promoting equality and opportunities for all. Whenever she witnesses any unjust activity, she feels obligated to confront it. If she sees someone being bullied or harassed because of their background, she intervenes and speaks out. Maureen draws inspiration from her mother, one of the first Traveller women on television advocating for the right to accommodation.
Maureen currently serves as the interim coordinator of Minceirs Whiden, which means “Travellers Talking” in CANT. Minceirs Whiden operates nationally and is situated in the ACT Centre in Athlone.
Maureen serves as the interim coordinator and is also a foster career approved by TUSLA. Recently, she was selected as one of the nine participants in the National End Ageism campaign by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IRHEC).
Maureen expressed her delight in an interview with Travellers’ Voice, where she shared her experience participating in the campaign. The campaign aims to highlight the daily challenges that older people face and features the perspectives of the nine participants. It will be broadcast on digital media, TV, and billboards nationwide.
