I recently embarked on a journey to Strasbourg, France, representing Eurodesk Ireland as a youth delegate at the European youth event 2023.Being the only Irish Traveller in attendance, I realized the significance of Traveller representation at such events, given the limited opportunities our community often faces. Through his participation, he aimed to inspire other young Travellers to embrace similar opportunities, enjoy their experiences, and pursue their dreams. Additionally, witnessing the exchange of ideas and cultures among individuals from diverse backgrounds across Europe was truly inspiring. I also had the privilege of attending various workshops and consultations at the European Parliament, further amplifying the Traveller voice.
As the sole Irish Traveller delegate, I felt a deep sense of pride and responsibility to represent not only his Irish heritage but also the Irish Traveller Community. Travellers, often face limited opportunities. Therefore, it was crucial to share his experiences and shed light on the challenges and triumphs of Traveller life. I realised the importance of representing his community and encouraging other young Travellers to embrace opportunities like this.
One of the most enriching aspects of the European youth event was the celebration of diversity. It was inspiring to meet people from various cultures and backgrounds to come together, to share their ideas, experiences, and dreams. Engaging in conversations with delegates from all across Europe broadened my understanding and appreciation of different perspectives. The exchange of ideas fostered an environment of mutual respect, unity, and shared learning.
“My journey to Strasbourg as an Irish Traveller youth delegate was a transformative experience. As the only Traveller in attendance, I realized the importance of representing my community and encouraging other young Travellers to embrace opportunities like this”.
I am very grateful for this opportunity, and would like to thank Eurodesk Ireland and Léargas for the opportunity to attend this European youth event. The experience has left an indelible mark on my youth work journey, reinforcing his passion for promoting inclusivity, breaking down barriers, and empowering young people, especially within the Traveller community. I am excited to share the knowledge and inspiration gained from this trip with his community and others, in the hopes of encouraging other young Travellers to seize opportunities, challenge limitations, and pursue their dreams.
